"ute decker’s arrestingly beautiful creations – wearable sculptures to adorn the hand, arm or neck – caused a considerable stir when they erupted onto the jewellery scene in 2009, instantly establishing her as one of the uk’s most exciting new studio-jewellers.
aptly described as ‘architectural jewellery’, the sweeping scale and ambition of her pieces, married to their minimalist design and unfettered originality, have since earned ute recognition from prestigious galleries, acclaim from the international press and collectors..."

goldsmiths' fair

this summer, ute decker’s work was exhibited alongside jewels by calder, picasso, man ray and louise bourgiose during design basel 2013 where she was the first living artist given a spotlight showcase by gallery didier, the leading gallery dealing in jewels by great artists of the 20th century.

this autumn ute decker has been selected as the featured maker of the prestigious goldsmiths’ fair held in the historic  goldsmiths’ hall near st. pauls cathedral. the fair is the largest of its kind  showcasing the work of over 180 international contemporary jewellers and silversmiths working in the uk today. each year the goldsmiths’ company chooses an outstanding jeweller whose work will be featured on the cover of the goldsmiths’ fair catalogue as well as on posters throughout london. this year this honour is bestowed on the ethical jewellery artist ute decker, about which the goldsmiths’ company says ” ute decker’s arrestingly beautiful creations – wearable sculptures to adorn the hand, arm or neck – caused a considerable stir when they erupted onto the jewellery scene in 2009, instantly establishing her as one of the uk’s most exciting new studio-jewellers.”

while the  fair’s catalogue  and posters will feature a selection of decker’s  smaller pieces in 18 carat fairtrade gold, she  is foremost renowned for her unique and highly collectable  sculptural statement pieces in recycled silver.

for the  goldsmiths’ fair this october decker has created a series of new wearable sculptures which she will present on small plinth specially made for her pieces  in 7500 year old black bog oak excavated from the cambridgeshire fenns. her highly collectable unique and small edition pieces are considered minimalist art works in their own right and the plinth will allow the pieces to be beautifully displayed in the home when not adorning the owner’s  body.

Ethical Jewellery – How businesses/designers can become more ethical in their trading and production

Speaker(s)
Ms Ute Decker

What is ethical jewellery?  What does the growing trend of ethical jewellery mean for jewellers, retailers and suppliers?

Touching upon current projects and developments, this seminar examines potential challenges and opportunities ethical jewellery is offering to the jewellery industry and what steps jewellers and retailers alike need to take to become more “ethical”.

Having successfully established herself as an “ethical” studio jeweller in 2009, Ute Decker will talk about her philosophy and experience. With her wealth of practical tips and resources, including an ethical supplier list and a concrete 10-point action plan, participants will be able to implement significant steps towards greening their studio and business within days.

architectural jewellery
london festival of architecture

after winning an editor’s choice award at london jewellery week, ute decker is showing her new body of sculptural and architecturally informed jewellery at the london festival of architecture.

recently described by the financial times  as “the architectural jeweller”  her pieces are  not so much  literal re-interpretations of actual buildings but rather major pieces of “jewellery that can be inhabited” ,  influenced by architectural forms.

by showcasing jewellery created in a sustainable manner in the context of the architecture festival, ute decker’s aim is to invite the viewer to consider the environmental and social impact of jewellery; a debate by now mainstream in architecture and urban planning, yet relatively new to jewellery.

her wearable sculptures in recycled silver are be part of a group exhibition of architecturally informed works by painters, photographers, textile artists and ceramicists.

april 2009

in my early 40's - self-taught in jewellery and having been making pieces as a hobby for nearly 10 years. then in 2009 i was invited to take part in a group show at london jewellery week and thought "wonderful, why not". at this first exhibition, i totally unexcpectedly won a price, received press coverage and private clients as well as a couple of collectors bought my work.

so i decided to change profession and set up as a studio-jeweller... it seems to have been a good decision - the page above is filling up nicely...

thank you to all of those who have supported me and my work in the early years...
