this summer studio-jeweller ute decker will become the first contemporary artist to be given a spotlight showcase at design basel (11– 16 june) by didier ltd, the london gallery that is unique worldwide in specializing in historical jewels by leading 20th-century painters and sculptors.

ute decker’s pieces will be presented alongside an exhibition of jewels by the renowned italian sculptors and jewellers, arnaldo and gio pomodoro, as well as works by other artists including louise bourgeois, many ray and louise nevelson.

didier haspeslagh, director of didier ltd, enthuses about ute decker as a “future icon of jewellery art”, and reveals that together with his wife martine “have been collecting ute’s work privately for some time now. her unique work was a real discovery for us and we are thrilled to bring her pieces to design basel.”

ute decker is attending design basel in person, and will be displaying new and previously unseen pieces alongside some classics from her collection.

What topics will we cover?

The course will explain the ethical issues in jewellery making and the significance of the newly available Fairtrade and Fairmined gold. You will learn about different approaches to ethical jewellery making as well as ethical sourcing options for metals including Fairtrade gold, bioresin, coloured gemstones and diamonds. You will learn about alternative environmentally-friendly studio practices and chemicals.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

• Understand the ethical issues in jewellery making
• Know about various initiatives, institutions and major developments relating to ethical jewellery
• Know where to source ethical metals and gemstones
• Know about casters, recycled chain and findings suppliers
• Know how you can become a Fairtrade gold licence holder
• Know how and where to source environmental friendly printing and packaging
• Use alternative studio practices and chemicals which are not damaging to the environment or to your own health.

fidm/fashion institute of design & merchandising in los angeles is researching new innovative materials and curates an innovative materials show and materials conference.

the intention and goal is to provide our students and future designers with the most updated information about the transformational and sustainable materials world.

alongside ute decker’s necklaces in bio-resin, suzanne lee’s biocouture will also be on display.

the travelling exhibition will next be in may in los angeles, august in san francisco and november orange county.

fidm displays sustainable fabrics, garments and materials made from milk, coffee grounds and coconut, as well as collaborate with high performance textile companies. the collection carries also the myto chair from italy, a chair slipcover made from luminex (glow in the dark) and the sonic fabric dress made from recycled audio cassette tapes.

after winning an editor’s choice award at london jewellery week, ute decker is showing her new body of sculptural and architecturally informed jewellery at the london festival of architecture.

recently described by the financial times  as “the architectural jeweller”  her pieces are  not so much  literal re-interpretations of actual buildings but rather major pieces of “jewellery that can be inhabited” ,  influenced by architectural forms.

by showcasing jewellery created in a sustainable manner in the context of the architecture festival, ute decker’s aim is to invite the viewer to consider the environmental and social impact of jewellery; a debate by now mainstream in architecture and urban planning, yet relatively new to jewellery.

in my early 40's - self-taught in jewellery and having been making pieces as a hobby for nearly 10 years. then in 2009 i was invited to take part in a group show at london jewellery week and thought "wonderful, why not". at this first exhibition, i totally unexcpectedly won a price, received press coverage and private clients as well as a couple of collectors bought my work.

so i decided to change profession and set up as a studio-jeweller... it seems to have been a good decision - the page above is filling up nicely...
